Joanne joined DCHC in June 2004, previously practicing
from Claypath Medical Practice in Durham City.
Although the Bowen technique is a relatively
new arrival on the comlimentary therapy scene. Developed in
the 1950's by Australian Tom Bowen and arrived in the UK in
1992, this new form of therapy is making a big impression
on the established members of the complimentary health care
industry. The technique is essentially a remedial therapy
and can therefore be used for the same range of conditions
that might be treated by a physiotherapist, Chiropractor or
Osteopath. What makes it different from these therapies is
the lack of any form of hard tissue manipulation, massage
or use of equipment.
The Bowen thechnique is a soft tissue technique
that is applied on the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the
body very gentley and with minimum pressure. The treatment
is performed through light clothing. The gentleness of the
treatment makes it especially useful for elderly or very young
or when treatment would otherwise be difficult perhaps due
to a injury being very recent and also pregnancy.

Therapy addresses many muscular-skeletal disfunctions
such as spondylosis, Whiplash, intense backache, sciatica,
frozen shoulder, sports injuries but can ease everything from
infant colic, IBS, migrane, asthma, hayfever, stress, ME,
respiritory problems, carpel tunnel syndrome, which does not
involve ballistic manipulation or long-term therapy to achieve
a lasting resolution to the presentation.
Consequently from the aspect of conventional
treatment these factors also make it comparitively inexpensive,
on average three to four treatments is all that is required.
The majority of clients will return only twice yearly by their
choice to receive theraputic support.
Bowen practitioners don't treat specific symptoms,
neither do they diagnose or claim to cure. What they do is
follow a simple practical set of pointers which encourage
perfect internal harmony, balance and realignment of the body
by gentle roll movements over various muscles.
